The optic vesicle (OV), an epithelial organ primordium derived from neuroectoderm, arises from the lateral forebrain of the zebrafish Danio rerio. Within the hierarchy, the OV is a developing ocular structure within the central nervous system. In developmental biology and embryology, this contact with surface ectoderm (SE) initiates lens induction and regionalization of the neuroepithelial wall that will later form neural retina and retinal pigment epithelium.
