A simplified schematic depicts the Z‑scheme of oxygenic photosynthesis, showing two light-harvesting reaction centers that correspond to Photosystem II (PSII) and Photosystem I (PSI) linked by an electron transport chain (ETC). Located in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast, a suborganelle within plant cells, these membrane protein complexes drive the light-dependent reactions in plant physiology and biochemistry. Electron flow generates a proton gradient for ATP (adenosine triphosphate) synthesis and reduces NADP+ to NADPH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate), enabling carbon fixation in Viridiplantae (plants).
