A stylized microbiology illustration shows a spherical colony of the green alga Volvox within the division Chlorophyta. Numerous small somatic cells form a peripheral layer embedded in a gelatinous extracellular matrix (ECM), while multiple larger daughter colonies occupy the interior of the coenobium. This colonial microorganism exemplifies a hierarchy of cells within a multicellular colony studied in phycology and developmental biology. Functionally, it performs photosynthesis in freshwater plankton and reproduces asexually by generating internal autocolonies that later emerge from the parent sphere.
