A skeletal formula illustrates phylloquinone, the fat-soluble vitamin K1 (K1; phylloquinone), with a naphthoquinone ring bearing two carbonyl oxygens (red) and a long phytyl isoprenoid side chain. In the biological hierarchy, this small molecule functions within the vitamin K cycle of cellular physiology. In biochemistry and nutrition, K1 acts as a cofactor for GGCX (gamma-glutamyl carboxylase), enabling gamma-carboxylation of glutamate residues in coagulation proteins, a reaction occurring predominantly in hepatocytes of the liver.
