A stylized illustration shows a fruticose lichen of the genus Usnea hanging from a tree twig. The pale gray, filamentous thallus forms repeatedly branched, hairlike strands attached by a small holdfast to the bark substrate. This epiphytic composite organism (fungus with photosynthetic partner) is depicted with a central axis and fine lateral fibrils typical of old man’s beard lichens, commonly studied in botany and lichenology for morphology and ecology.
