A cross-sectional schematic of the stomach wall shows a mucosal defect consistent with a gastric ulcer. The epithelial lining of the gastric mucosa (tissue level) is eroded, forming a crater that penetrates toward the submucosa, with adjacent arterioles and venules visible. Beneath the mucosa lies the submucosa (yellow) and muscularis externa (red) of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract. In anatomy, histology, and pathology, this structure represents gastric tissue whose normal role is secretion and barrier protection; the lesion disrupts mucosal defense and may expose vessels, predisposing to hemorrhage.
