An anatomical illustration shows the tympanic membrane (TM) viewed from the external auditory canal (EAC). The circular pars tensa exhibits radial collagen fibers converging at the umbo, where the manubrium (handle) of the malleus is attached, with a small superior pars flaccida. This membrane, a tissue-level anatomical structure within the auditory system, forms the lateral wall of the middle ear (ME). In otology and auditory physiology, the TM transduces airborne sound into mechanical vibrations for the ossicles while helping protect the sterile middle ear cavity.
