The device is an algae turf scrubber (ATS), a biofilter used in aquatic ecology and environmental engineering. At the structural hierarchy, filamentous algal cells form a cohesive biofilm on the mesh panel within the filtration apparatus. Functionally it removes dissolved nutrients, notably nitrate (NO3−) and phosphate (PO43−), enhancing water quality via biomass harvest, with inlet and outlet pipes directing flow.
