A stylized depiction of a metacyclic trypomastigote, the infective, flagellated cell of Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi). The unicellular protozoan shows an elongated body with an undulating membrane and a free flagellum characteristic of kinetoplastid morphology. In the biological hierarchy, it represents a single eukaryotic cell belonging to a parasitic species within Kinetoplastida. In parasitology and microbiology, this stage enables motility and host invasion, developing in the hindgut of triatomine bugs before transmission to mammals, where it initiates American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease).
