A schematic shows a thromboelastometry setup with a vertical pin suspended in a cylindrical cup containing a whole blood sample. The device, used in hematology and clinical pathology, measures viscoelastic clot formation as the pin oscillates relative to the cup to derive coagulation parameters. This analytical instrument operates on a biofluid within the circulatory system hierarchy (blood, a connective tissue). The method is termed ROTEM (rotational thromboelastometry) and is closely related to TEG (thromboelastography).
