A ball-and-stick chemical diagram shows a tetracyclic antibiotic small molecule with four fused rings and multiple carbonyl, hydroxyl, and a dimethylamino (–N(CH3)2) group. In biological hierarchy, it is a small molecule that targets the macromolecular complex of the bacterial ribosome within the cytoplasm. In microbiology and pharmacology, it inhibits translation by reversibly binding the 30S small ribosomal subunit and interacting with rRNA (ribosomal RNA), blocking aminoacyl‑tRNA (transfer RNA) attachment and thereby preventing protein synthesis.
