A simplified cytogenetic schematic shows a chromosome with the centromere positioned at a terminal end, yielding a single chromosomal arm and two sister chromatids converging at the tip. In biological hierarchy, it is a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)–protein complex within the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell. In cell biology and genetics, the centromeric region assembles the kinetochore (KT), which binds spindle microtubules (MT) to enable accurate chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis.
