A schematic illustration of a cysticercus (larval bladder) of a Taenia tapeworm. The invaginated scolex is visible within a fluid-filled cyst, depicting the metacestode stage. In parasitology and helminth anatomy, this larval parasite inhabits tissues of an intermediate host and enables transmission; upon ingestion by the definitive host, the scolex evaginates to form the adult cestode. Hierarchically, the scolex (organ) lies within the cysticercus (larva) of Taenia spp. (tapeworm; genus Taenia).
