A minimal schematic represents the sulfonylurea receptor 2 (SUR2/ABCC9), a regulatory ATP-binding cassette (ABC) protein within the ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel complex. In membrane physiology and pharmacology, this subunit resides in the plasma membrane, coupling cellular metabolism to electrical activity by regulating K+ efflux through Kir6.x pore-forming subunits. The illustration abstracts transmembrane elements of this membrane protein complex. Functionally, SUR2 modulates channel opening in response to intracellular nucleotides and is the pharmacologic target of sulfonylurea drugs.
