A sagittal neuroanatomical diagram of the human brain highlights the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), a hypothalamic brain nucleus situated in the anterior diencephalon just superior to the optic chiasm and adjacent to the third ventricle. In the biological hierarchy, it is a neuronal cluster within the hypothalamus of the central nervous system. In neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and chronobiology, the SCN functions as the master circadian pacemaker, receiving retinal input via the retinohypothalamic tract to regulate daily endocrine, sleep–wake, and metabolic rhythms in Homo sapiens (human).
