A histologic-style diagram depicts skeletal muscle tissue in longitudinal (left) and cross-sectional (right) views. Parallel muscle fibers (myocytes) in longitudinal view display regular striations created by sarcomeres, while polygonal fibers in cross-section are separated by endomysium and thicker perimysial septa within connective extracellular matrix (ECM). Peripheral oval nuclei are present in individual fibers. In hierarchical terms, myofibrils reside within fibers, which group into fascicles forming the tissue of the musculoskeletal system. In anatomy, histology, and physiology, this tissue generates voluntary force and enables movement.
