A stylized histological illustration shows a single flattened corneocyte, the anucleate cell of the stratum corneum (SC) in the epidermis of the skin, part of the integumentary system. In the biological hierarchy, this represents a terminally differentiated keratinocyte within the outer epidermal layer overlaying the dermis. In anatomy, histology, and dermatology, corneocytes form the cornified barrier that limits transepidermal water loss (TEWL), resists mechanical abrasion, and impedes microbial penetration. The site depicted is the superficial cutaneous surface.
