A simplified botanical diagram depicts a stomatal complex on the leaf epidermis. Two kidney-shaped guard cells flank a central stomatal pore, bordered by adjacent epidermal cells. In the biological hierarchy, these specialized cells are components of the epidermal tissue of the leaf, forming a microscopic plant anatomical structure. In botany and plant physiology, stomata regulate gas exchange and transpiration by altering guard-cell turgor, enabling uptake of CO2 (carbon dioxide) for photosynthesis and release of O2 (oxygen) and H2O (water) vapor.
