A schematic illustrates a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) composed of two porous electrodes enclosing a dense ceramic electrolyte. At one electrode–electrolyte interface, carbon dioxide (CO2) is electrochemically reduced to carbon monoxide (CO) and oxide ions (O2−). The O2− ions migrate through the solid oxide layer to the opposite electrode, where they recombine to form molecular oxygen (O2).
