A schematic icon labeled “U4” represents the U4 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (U4 snRNP), a ribonucleoprotein complex within the spliceosome of the eukaryotic nucleus. In molecular biology and RNA biochemistry, this snRNP base-pairs with U6 snRNA to form the U4/U6 di-snRNP and, with U5, the tri-snRNP that catalyzes pre-mRNA (precursor messenger RNA) splicing. Hierarchically, it is an RNA–protein complex within a macromolecular machine operating inside the cell nucleus.
