A simplified illustration depicts a fusiform smooth muscle cell (SMC) with an elongated body and a single centrally located nucleus. In biological hierarchy, this cell is a unit of smooth muscle tissue within the muscular system of hollow viscera. In anatomy, histology, and physiology, SMCs produce involuntary contraction via actin–myosin interactions, enabling peristalsis, vasoconstriction, and sphincter tone. Typical sites include the walls of blood vessels (tunica media) and tubular organs of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive tracts.
