Skin on chip model. A schematic cross-section shows a microfluidic organ-on-a-chip device replicating layered skin. Within the device (OoC, organ-on-a-chip), an epidermis of stratified keratinocytes with a stratum corneum overlies a dermis containing fibroblasts embedded in ECM (extracellular matrix) and collagen fibers, demonstrating a cell-within-tissue hierarchy. Lateral perfusion channels enable nutrient delivery and waste removal via microfluidics. In the fields of dermatology, physiology, and tissue engineering, this engineered tissue model (anatomical structure) is used to study barrier function, percutaneous drug transport, wound healing, and inflammation at the body surface.
