Skin on chip model. A schematic cross-section shows a microfluidic organ-on-a-chip device replicating layered skin. Within the device (OoC, organ-on-a-chip), an epidermis of stratified keratinocytes with a stratum corneum overlies a dermis containing fibroblasts embedded in ECM (extracellular matrix) and collagen fibers, demonstrating a cell-within-tissue hierarchy. Lateral perfusion channels enable nutrient delivery and waste removal via microfluidics.
