Within the biological hierarchy, it is a cell type within blood tissue of the circulatory system. In hematology and pathology, sickling results from hemoglobin S (HbS) polymerization, which reduces deformability and oxygen-carrying efficiency. Functionally, the altered RBC compromises microvascular flow, predisposing to vaso-occlusion and hemolysis characteristic of sickle cell disease.
