These prokaryotic cells are Gram-negative (G−) bacilli in the family Enterobacteriaceae, examined in microbiology and infectious disease pathology. In biological hierarchy, individual bacterial cells invade epithelial tissue within the human large intestine (colon) of the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Functionally, these enteric pathogens cause shigellosis (bacillary dysentery) by penetrating colonic mucosa and provoking acute inflammatory diarrhea.
