The shell is a biomineralized exoskeleton of a mollusk (phylum Mollusca) within marine ecosystems, depicted as an anatomical structure at the organism level. In marine biology and oceanography, it serves protective and structural roles and is composed largely of CaCO3 (calcium carbonate). Because such shells are sensitive to reduced pH (potential of hydrogen), they are used to study ocean acidification effects on calcifying organisms in coastal benthic habitats.
