The organism is a cercaria, a free-swimming developmental stage within the life cycle of the trematode parasite Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni), depicted with an elongated body and a bifurcated tail. In the biological hierarchy, it is a larval form of a parasitic flatworm (phylum Platyhelminthes) that leaves a snail intermediate host in freshwater and seeks mammalian skin for penetration. In parasitology and infectious disease biology, this stage enables transmission and initiates intestinal schistosomiasis in humans.
