A stylized mycological illustration depicts a cup-shaped ascocarp with a bright red hymenial surface and a pale margin, attached to branching hyphae forming the basal mycelium. The organism is Sarcoscypha coccinea (scarlet elf cup), a filamentous fungus in the phylum Ascomycota. Hierarchically, hyphae aggregate into mycelium that gives rise to the macroscopic fruiting body (apothecium), which houses asci producing ascospores for sexual reproduction. The site shown is the interface between the mycelial network and the emergent aerial ascocarp.
