A stylized microanatomical illustration shows the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) forming triads with transverse tubules (T-tubules) within a skeletal muscle fiber. Red cylindrical myofibrils are encased by a purple membrane network and paired terminal cisternae flanking each T-tubule. In the hierarchy, the SR is an intracellular organelle within a myocyte, itself part of striated muscle tissue. In physiology and cell biology, this triad enables excitation–contraction coupling by propagating action potentials and releasing Ca2+ to trigger actin–myosin interaction. The site is the myoplasm of skeletal muscle.
