A schematic of a skeletal muscle fiber showing the sarcolemma overlying myofibrils wrapped by the sarcoplasmic reticulum. At regular intervals, a triad forms where a transverse tubule (T-tubule), an invagination of the sarcolemma, is flanked by two terminal cisternae of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). This cellular arrangement, within skeletal muscle tissue, is studied in anatomy, histology, and physiology. The triad enables excitation–contraction coupling (EC coupling) by triggering Ca2+ release from the SR to surrounding myofibrils.
