Sacral multifidus muscle. This posterior anatomical illustration depicts the sacral segment of the multifidus, a deep paraspinal skeletal muscle, highlighted between the sacrum and lumbar vertebrae within the axial musculoskeletal system. In human anatomy and physiology, this muscle belongs to the transversospinalis group and lies deep to the erector spinae. It stabilizes lumbosacral spinal segments and assists spinal extension and contralateral rotation. The site is the dorsal pelvis and lower vertebral column of Homo sapiens (human).
