A ball-and-stick chemical diagram depicts a ribose–phosphate unit, showing a pentose sugar (ribose) attached to a tetrahedral phosphate group via phosphoester bonds. In biochemistry and molecular biology, this sugar–phosphate moiety forms the repeating substructure of the nucleic-acid backbone, linking nucleotides with 3′–5′ phosphodiester bonds and establishing 5′→3′ directionality. Atoms are color-coded: carbon gray, oxygen red, phosphorus yellow, and hydrogen white. This molecular substructure resides within RNA (ribonucleic acid) and, with deoxyribose substitution, within DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).
