A dorsal illustration of a male hard tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (R. sanguineus), commonly called the brown dog tick. The arachnid ectoparasite (phylum Arthropoda; class Arachnida; family Ixodidae) shows an oval idiosoma with a broad scutum covering most of the dorsum and eight segmented legs extending laterally. In acarology and parasitology, this species parasitizes domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and feeds hematophagously, functioning as a vector of tick-borne pathogens affecting canines and humans.
