A schematic illustrates a reverse micelle in which amphiphilic surfactant molecules self-assemble with hydrophilic head groups facing an internal aqueous core and hydrophobic hydrocarbon tails projecting into a nonpolar solvent. At the hierarchy level, individual molecules form a nanoscale supramolecular aggregate within a liquid phase. In colloid science, physical chemistry, and biochemistry, this structure encapsulates water or other polar solutes, enabling their solubilization in organic media and functioning as a nanoreactor or microenvironment for reactions in nonaqueous systems.
