A histological-style diagram of the airway lining shows pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium (PCCE) forming the respiratory mucosa. Tall ciliated epithelial cells and interspersed mucin-secreting goblet cells border the lumen, their cilia propelling a surface mucus layer for mucociliary clearance (MCC). A distinct basement membrane underlies the epithelium, leading into the lamina propria connective tissue. This tissue-level structure resides in the conducting portion of the respiratory tract, such as the nasal cavity and trachea, and is studied in anatomy, histology, and physiology.
