This schematic depicts a human spinal reflex circuit linking the skin of the forearm to contraction of the arm flexor. Sensory neurons convey afferent input from cutaneous receptors along a peripheral nerve to the dorsal region of the spinal cord (central nervous system, CNS), which relays through interneurons to motor neurons. Efferent fibers in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) activate the biceps brachii, producing elbow flexion.
