A schematic depiction of a single prohemocyte, the hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) of arthropods, illustrated as a round cell with a large nucleus occupying most of the cytoplasm. In hierarchical context, it is a blood cell precursor within the hemolymph of the open circulatory system and hematopoietic organs. In cell biology and immunology, this progenitor differentiates into mature hemocytes that mediate innate immune defense, phagocytosis, melanization, and wound repair.
