A schematic cytological image of a proerythroblast, an erythroid precursor cell with a large central nucleus and a thin rim of basophilic cytoplasm dotted with ribonucleoprotein. Depicted at the cell level within hematopoietic tissue, it resides in red bone marrow (BM) and belongs to the erythroid lineage in hematology and histology. Functionally, this cell initiates erythropoiesis, differentiating into basophilic erythroblasts and ultimately red blood cells (RBCs), while beginning hemoglobin synthesis within the erythroid series.
