A schematic cutaway depicts a nuclear pore complex (NPC) embedded in the double membrane of the nuclear envelope. The protein assembly spans the outer and inner nuclear membranes, with cytoplasmic filaments above and a basket-like scaffold projecting into the nucleoplasm. In cell biology and molecular biology, this macromolecular protein complex regulates nucleocytoplasmic transport of RNAs and proteins. Hierarchically, it is a supramolecular complex within the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell, located at the nuclear envelope to mediate selective gating and cargo translocation.
