Podocyte cell. A simplified illustration depicts a specialized visceral epithelial cell of the renal glomerulus with a central nucleus and basal foot process-like projections. In biological hierarchy, this is a cell within the glomerular tuft of the nephron in the kidney, part of the urinary system. In histology and renal physiology, podocytes interdigitate to form slit diaphragms along the glomerular basement membrane (GBM), constituting the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) that regulates ultrafiltration of plasma into Bowman’s space.
