The cell, a secretory epithelial cell of the respiratory system, contains lamellar bodies representing surfactant storage granules. In anatomy, histology, and respiratory physiology, this cell synthesizes and secretes pulmonary surfactant (PS) to reduce surface tension and supports alveolar repair by serving as a progenitor for type I pneumocytes.
