A schematic shows a flattened squamous epithelial cell with a thin cytoplasmic lamina and a single central nucleus, representing a type I alveolar epithelial cell (AEC I; also called alveolar type I, ATI, pneumocyte). As a cell within the alveolar epithelium of lung parenchyma, part of the respiratory system, it lines the alveolar wall. In pulmonary histology and physiology, this cell provides the ultrathin blood–air barrier that covers most of the alveolar surface, enabling rapid diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide during gas exchange.
