A stylized illustration shows numerous crescent-shaped Plasmodium sporozoites emerging from a ruptured oocyst. These unicellular protozoan cells, studied in parasitology and microbiology, are the motile infective stage of the malaria parasite within the mosquito vector (genus Anopheles). Produced in the midgut oocyst, the sporozoites disperse through the hemocoel and colonize the salivary glands, from which they are injected into a vertebrate host to initiate the hepatic stage of infection.
