In the biological hierarchy, individual merozoite cells are contained in a schizont inside a red blood cell (RBC), part of circulating blood tissue. In parasitology, microbiology, and hematology, this protozoan parasite represents the asexual blood-stage responsible for replicative division and subsequent merozoite release, which invades new erythrocytes, driving malaria pathophysiology.
