A schematic cutaway of the plant extracellular matrix (ECM) surrounding a cell, showing the cell wall external to the plasma membrane (PM). The phospholipid bilayer PM underlies a primary wall composed of cellulose microfibrils cross-linked by hemicellulose and embedded in a pectin-rich matrix. This hierarchical assembly—microfibrils within the wall of a cell within plant tissue—is studied in plant anatomy, cell biology, and biochemistry. Functionally, the wall confers tensile strength, controls cell expansion, mediates adhesion, and acts as a porous protective barrier.
