Schematic cross-section shows two adjacent plant cells separated by a cell wall traversed by a plasmodesma (PD) containing a central desmotubule (DT). In cell biology and plant anatomy, this subcellular junction links the cytoplasm of neighboring cells, with the DT continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and a surrounding cytoplasmic sleeve. Located within the cell wall at cell–cell interfaces, the PD–DT complex enables symplastic transport and intercellular signaling of ions, metabolites, small proteins, and RNAs, coordinating tissue-level physiology.
