A circular Petri dish contains agar medium with several discrete green colonies, representing revertant growth used in a plate-based mutagenicity assay. The assay in microbiology and toxicology employs Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) histidine-auxotroph strains (His−) to detect chemical-induced reverse mutations to His+ on minimal medium. In the biological hierarchy, individual prokaryotic cells form colonies within a culture plate, an in vitro laboratory system.
