Pathological state neuron astrocyte microglia vessel. This schematic depicts the CNS (central nervous system) neurovascular unit during pathology. A neuron with soma and axon lies adjacent to a brain capillary, whose endothelial lining forms the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Star-shaped astrocytes extend endfeet to the vessel, while ramified microglia occupy the parenchyma. Within the hierarchy, these neural and glial cells reside in brain tissue surrounding the microvasculature (NVU, neurovascular unit). In neuroanatomy, physiology, and neuropathology, these elements enable signaling, homeostasis, immune surveillance, and barrier regulation.
