A cross-sectional schematic depicts the thoracic paravertebral space adjacent to the vertebral column. This anatomical space (TPVS, thoracic paravertebral space) within the thoracic wall is bordered by ribs, transverse processes, and paraspinal muscles, and lies superficial to the parietal pleura. It contains the intercostal nerve (ICN) with accompanying intercostal artery and vein. In human anatomy and anesthesiology, this region provides a target for paravertebral nerve block to achieve unilateral somatic and sympathetic analgesia in Homo sapiens (human).
