A 2D ball-and-stick rendering of ethanedioic acid (H2C2O4), the simplest dicarboxylic acid. The molecule comprises two adjacent carboxyl groups (–COOH), each containing a carbonyl (C=O) and a hydroxyl (O–H), with carbon in gray, oxygen in red, and hydrogen in white. As a small organic molecule studied in organic chemistry and biochemistry, it functions as a relatively strong acid and chelating agent that forms insoluble calcium oxalate.
