A schematic shows an oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsion droplet with a yellow hydrophobic oil core surrounded by surfactant molecules: hydrophobic tails penetrate the core while hydrophilic headgroups (white spheres) face the aqueous continuous phase. In colloid and physical chemistry, this supramolecular assembly represents a micelle-like structure formed by amphiphiles. Hierarchically, individual surfactant molecules self-assemble into a droplet within a colloidal dispersion. Such systems enable solubilization of lipophilic compounds and are widely applied in pharmaceutics and biotechnology for delivery and stabilization.
